The first of two weddings in a row at Rutland Water for me. Sally and Paul had chosen a campsite on the south shore with some amazing views. Their cause was helped by weather that just got better and better as the day went on. The ceremony at All Saints Church in Stamford in Lincolnshire got proceedings underway. With a lap of honour around the church completed, then the guests headed down the road to Rutland Water. There the party really got going at Lyndon Top Campsite.

On arrival at the reception, the wind blowing across Rutland Water threatened a dampener on the wedding. With conditions still a bit chilly outside, the drinks reception took place in the marquee amongst the dining tables. This gave everyone a sneak preview of the personalised jars of jam and bottles of beer waiting for them. This was one of the more relaxed weddings that I’ve attended, with the catering staff a little baffled at the guests wandering around, chatting and enjoying the sunshine during the meal.

Everyone was in high spirits (and full of them too!) which of course meant for some dancefloor antics. These were accompanied by the great Iron Boot Scrapers doing modern tunes on traditional jazz instruments. The evening was rounded off with a great sunset, and some of the best pizza I have ever tasted. A visit was apparently required (after I had left) by the local constabulary thanks to some late-night paddling in the water. The exuberance of the guests, not dulled by the pizza, set off an osprey alarm. It’s all fun and games until someone disturbs an osprey!
