It had been a few years since my previous wedding at Oakham Castle. However, I had photographed the bride Natalie’s sister’s wedding at Stapleford Park the previous year. So, there was a healthy familiarity to proceedings. That occasion was a party to remember, so I had high hopes for a repeat performance. The day started at the beautiful Rutland Hall Hotel on the banks of Rutland Water. There was pink fizz all round, and when the preparations were complete, a gorgeous white Rolls-Royce shipped the bride off to Oakham Castle.
Oakham Castle Wedding Ceremony in Rutland
A short distance away in the Great Hall of ancient Oakham Castle, Simon was patiently waiting. Built between 1180 and 1190, it is the finest surviving example of Norman architecture in Europe. The walls are covered in lots of ornate ceremonial horseshoes donated by peers of the realm. The rather nervous groom held it together, and the newlywed couple were soon out in the sun. There was time for pink confetti and a bit of mingling, then everyone was back in their cars.

Upon leaving Oakham Castle, we all headed over to Rutland Hall Hotel for the wedding reception. The first job was for the bride to throw her bouquet. The sunshine brought out the Pimms, and then a receiving line signalled the sit-down part of the day. As with last year, the party was in full swing fairly quickly. We were treated to old school sweets, some crooning, some dancing and a lively game of bingo. Eventually, the appearance of the light-up dance floor signalled the evening party.
