Capturing your day in one of London’s most iconic venues

London has some fantastic town halls and register offices to host your wedding, and one of my favourites is Islington Town Hall. Out of all of the hundreds of wedding venues I have visited, this is the one I have worked at most. This impressive Grade II-listed building was built in 1925, and has its main entrance on Upper Street. It has an amazing grand façade, and a beautiful marble staircase running through the middle of the building.

As an Islington Town Hall wedding photographer, I’ve had the pleasure of capturing countless wedding stories in this historic North London gem. With its elegant architecture, stylish interiors, and central location, Islington Town Hall is one of the most popular venues for civil ceremonies in the capital. Whether you’re planning an intimate elopement or a grand celebration, the variety of ceremony spaces inside offer the perfect backdrop for timeless, story-driven photography.

Below, I’ll walk you through each of the key ceremony spaces inside Islington Town Hall. I’ll also share what makes each one so special from a documentary wedding photographer’s perspective.

The Council Chamber

The Council Chamber is the largest and most iconic space in Islington Town Hall, and for good reason. This grand, circular room features rich wood panelling, a high domed ceiling, and beautiful natural light that pours in through the surrounding windows. It seats up to 100 guests and is ideal for couples who want a traditional yet stylish setting for their vows.

From a photographic point of view, the Council Chamber is a dream to shoot in. The layout allows for wide, sweeping shots of the ceremony, while the curved benches create a natural frame for capturing the couple and their guests. The soft light enhances skin tones beautifully, and the warm textures of the wood add a classic feel to every image.

As an Islington Town Hall wedding photographer, I love documenting the build-up in this room. The nervous excitement, the reactions of family and friends, and those emotional glances during the vows. It’s a space that elevates a basic legal ceremony into something truly grand.

Room 99

For couples planning a smaller, more intimate wedding, Room 99 offers a wonderfully personal setting. Located just off the main corridor, this charming room can fit up to 12 people. It’s perfect for elopements, midweek ceremonies, or second weddings where the focus is on simplicity and connection.

Room 99 is filled with soft, flattering light thanks to its tall windows. The neutral decor keeps the attention on the couple, making it an ideal space for photography. As a documentary photographer, I’m able to quietly capture those subtle, unscripted moments that truly define a wedding day. Holding hands, shared smiles, a teary-eyed witness.

Small ceremonies in Room 99 have an unmistakable intimacy. There’s something magical about hearing every word and being surrounded only by your nearest and dearest. It’s one of my favourite places in Islington Town Hall to capture love in its rawest form.

Why Should You Get Married at Islington Town Hall?

Islington Town Hall is one of London’s most popular and photogenic venues, and for good reason. With its grand entrance, sweeping marble staircase, and beautifully restored ceremony rooms, it strikes the perfect balance between classic architecture and a relaxed feel. The Council Chamber, with its wood-panelled walls and natural light pouring in from the dome above, offers a unique and atmospheric setting that feels more like a private members’ club than a register office.

Beyond the building itself, its location on Upper Street places you right in the heart of one of London’s liveliest neighbourhoods. After the ceremony, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to pubs, restaurants, and reception venues. Whether you’re heading to a nearby gastro pub, an urban warehouse space, or keeping it low-key with drinks at a local bar. For couples who want a stylish, no-fuss city wedding with lots of character, Islington Town Hall delivers on all fronts.

The Mayor’s Parlour

Looking for something truly unique and luxurious? The Mayor’s Parlour is a standout option at Islington Town Hall. It accommodates up to 20 guests and boasts rich decor, including plush furnishings, an ornate fireplace, and historic portraits. It feels exclusive and deeply personal.

This room has a regal, almost cinematic quality that suits both modern and vintage-inspired weddings. As an Islington Town Hall wedding photographer, I enjoy the challenge of photographing in a more dimly lit space. The warm tones and ambient light create an intimate mood, and a good documentary photographer knows how to work with that to produce rich, atmospheric images.

The Richmond Room

The Richmond Room strikes the perfect balance between elegance and intimacy. Seating up to 60 guests, it’s ideal for medium-sized weddings. The room is light and airy, with crisp white walls, period features, and large sash windows that create a beautiful, even light throughout the day.

From a photography perspective, the Richmond Room offers flexibility. I can move easily around the space to photograph the couple from multiple angles without distraction. The light tones and natural light give every image a soft, romantic quality. Ideal for timeless documentary wedding photography.

The Richmond Room also flows well for post-ceremony moments. There’s plenty of space for hugs, confetti, and those spontaneous group shots as everyone relaxes and begins to celebrate.

The Canonbury Suite & The Angel Suite

For something even more personal, the Angel Suite and its sister room the Canonbury Suite, are two of Islington Town Hall’s most intimate spaces, seating just the couple, two witnesses and the registrars. They’re perfect for elopements or small weekday weddings where the focus is purely on the connection between you both. If you want a photographer present, they have to be one of your witnesses! I am of course happy to oblige.

The rooms’ soft light and quiet atmosphere create the perfect setting for heartfelt vows and natural, close-up photography. As a documentary photographer, I love capturing the quiet anticipation and raw emotion that smaller spaces like these smaller rooms naturally encourage. These are the weddings where every detail matters, and every moment feels deeply meaningful.

Where to head after your Islington Town Hall ceremony?

After your Islington Town Hall wedding ceremony, you’re spoiled for choice when it comes to stylish and welcoming reception venues nearby. Just a short walk away, Frederick’s offers a modern European menu in a sleek, light-filled space. Perfect for relaxed dining and elegant celebrations. For something more traditional, The Draper’s Arms delivers charm in abundance with its Georgian architecture, seasonal food, and cosy yet refined atmosphere. Both venues are ideal for couples looking to continue the day without straying far from the Town Hall steps.

If you’re after something a little more eclectic or industrial, there are great options across North and East London. The Werkz and The Depot offer flexible, urban spaces with bags of character, perfect for larger parties or late-night dancing. For a touch of Parisian-inspired glamour, Bellanger in Islington Green combines classic brasserie style with effortless service.

If you’re heading slightly further afield, Zetter Townhouse in Clerkenwell provides a quirky, boutique feel with incredible cocktails, while Shoreditch Studios delivers a spacious, blank-canvas venue ideal for creative, design-led receptions. Whether you’re planning an intimate dinner or a full-blown party, there’s a perfect venue to follow your Islington Town Hall vows.
