My first wedding in the Monks’ Refectory at Notley Abbey, but unfortunately not the best weather for it. Sian and Matt found me through an old university friend, and that friend’s husband was best man for Matt. He was also a major contributor to my best woman’s speech at my wedding. I knew therefore that he was in for a fairly bumpy ride! Sian got ready in the Bridal Suite with her team of friends and family and hair and make-up people. The groom arrived later and got ready in one of the other bedrooms.
They held their ceremony in The Abbot’s Hall, during which the ring bearer downed tools and refused to take part. It’s only a small ceremony room, so there was a large standing crowd at the back. The couple then held a drinks reception in the modernised abbey building, before heading into the lovely barn for their wedding breakfast. After dinner we were treated to the aforementioned speeches, complete with yodelling groom. After coffee, the newlyweds cut their cake and did their first dance. Then the band struck up and the guests hit the floor hard.
