My next wedding found me in the outstanding surroundings of Highclere Castle. This venue is known as the setting for the popular ITV period drama series Downton Abbey.
Marion and Heinz planned their wedding from their home in San Francisco, with help from Marion’s family in the UK. It was a truly international affair. Heinz and his family are from Switzerland, and Marion’s mum and her family are Jamaican.
There was a brief snag when the father of the bride managed to lock his keys in his car (along with his suit). This prompted an emergency drive home by Marion’s brother. After that, we headed to the ceremony at the nearby Church of the Ascension in Burghclere. We had musical performances by family members and Marion’s uncle conducted parts of the ceremony. Turns out he’s a vicar in Jamaica!
Back at Highclere, great effort had been put into the details with great escort cards, table names and place cards. They all featured drawings of various international locations close to the couple’s hearts. The family involvement continued with a number of very thorough speeches with slideshows. Plus, there wasn’t a wartime outfit in sight!
