Lots of my clients get married in the church in which they were christened, but very few of them get married in the place they were born. Jocelyn was born at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in Smithfield, East London an undisclosed number of years before holding her wedding reception there, but first she had a date with Gabriel at the neighbouring Priory Church of St Bartholomew the Great, one of the oldest churches in London.
Parts of the church date back to the 12th Century, and it was one of the few churches to survive the Great Fire of London. In this incredible setting the ceremony was conducted by a friend of the couple, featured an amazing choir and when the deed was done the couple left through a military guard of honour thanks to Gabriel’s work colleagues. There followed a drinks reception outside the church, then a short walk into the grounds of St Barts Hospital and up to the Great Hall. The history lesson continued as St Barts is the oldest hospital in Europe still operating on the same site.
Then speeches, scoffing, selfies, spinning, swaying and swinging before a grand exit and a wander to their hotel through Smithfield Market.
